The semifinals are nearly complete, and we have one half of a World Cup stage set. Today’s match between Netherlands and Sweden will see the winner go on to compete for the World Cup against the United States. The loser will face off for a third place battle against England.
Netherlands enters the day as favorites, despite this being the only time they’ve made the semifinal round in a World Cup. Despite their prior World Cup history, the dutch have only build on each of their tournament performances. The European champions have an attacking duo in Vivianne Miedema and Lieke Martens, and they will need to remain dynamic if they are to beat Sweden.
Sweden is riding the wave of a momentous win over Germany in their quarterfinal match-up. Their journey here began after coming in second in group F after losing to the United States, and a round of 16 win over Canada. After finally beating the European giants to advance into the semifinal, it seems odd to refer to them as underdogs. Their own offensive duo in Stina Blackstenius and Sofia Jakobsson will have the responsibility of keeping the Netherlands’ backline honest.
