The World Cup Round of 16 rolls on today. Sweden, Canada, the United States, and Spain will all play today for a chance to move on into the quarter finals.
The first match of the day will feature Spain taking on the United States. The USWNT are coming off of a dominant showing in group F having won all 3 of their matches. Spain got a taste of all different types of results in their group as they have a win, draw, and loss from group B. The US enter the match as favorites on the day. Spain’s game plan of technicality through possession is going to meet it’s toughest test, as the United States can also possess, build attack, and score from all angles.
For the second match of the day, Sweden will take on Canada. Both teams enter this match having placed second in their groups. Sweden fell to group F winners United States on their third and final group game, 2-0. While Canada fell to group E leaders Netherlands on their final group match, 2-1.
Both teams have a mix of youth and veteran leadership on their squad with the potential to spoil either side’s tournament. Expect Canada to try and play patient while Sweden tries to dominate the midfield.
