We’ve made it to Matchday 5! Group E continues their play with New Zealand and the Netherlands, while Group F finally begins their World Cup journeys as Chile, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States all play today.
In the first of three games taking place today New Zealand’s Football Ferns take on European Champions, the Netherlands. While New Zealand’s prior World Cup experiences haven’t seen them win a match or advance through group stages, they look poised to break that streak this time around but the Netherlands won’t make it easy in the first match with players like Shanice Van De Sanden and Lieke Martens.
Second game of the day has Group E opening up play with Chile facing off against Sweden. Chile’s Women’s National Team is playing in their first World Cup ever where Goalkeeper Christiane Endler could have an impact this match. Sweden are a team coming in with a long World Cup history, captained by their veteran midfielder, Caroline Seger.
Matchday 5 has a grand finale that features the defending champions the United States facing off against Thailand. The USWNT will have one of the best front lines in the tournament with Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, and Tobin Heath. Thailand will likely rely on Suchawadee Nildhamrong, otherwise known as Miranda Nild to those who know her from her NCAA days with UC Berkley.
